Duo New Tab

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 19, 2026

Duo New Tab does not sell or share personal data, and its developer receives no data from it. The extension contains no analytics, no advertising and no tracking code, and has no account or sync server.

What is stored, and where

The following is saved only on your device, in Chrome’s local extension storage and the new tab page’s local storage:

This data never leaves your browser unless you export it yourself with “Export Backup”, which downloads a file to your computer. That file holds your Home Screen, settings, notes, reminders, calculator and photos; keep it somewhere safe.

Online services Duo New Tab uses

App Store icons (Apple)

When “App Store Icons” is on (the default), Duo New Tab asks Apple’s App Store search service (itunes.apple.com) for the app that matches each shortcut. It sends that app’s public App Store id, or the shortcut’s name as a search term. The icon image is then loaded from Apple’s image servers (mzstatic.com).

Site icons (Google and the site itself)

When “Site Icons” is on (the default), shortcuts without an App Store icon show the site’s own home-screen icon, requested from that website, or its favicon from Google’s favicon service, which receives the site’s domain.

Weather (Open-Meteo and BigDataCloud)

The Weather widget shows the forecast for your location or for a city you choose. In “My Location” mode, Duo New Tab by default asks BigDataCloud for your approximate city, which it works out from your internet address, and sends those approximate coordinates to Open-Meteo for the forecast.

Duo New Tab never asks for your precise location by itself. Only if you press “Use Precise Location” in Settings and allow it in Chrome’s prompt, your device’s position is sent to Open-Meteo for the forecast and to BigDataCloud to name the place. You can withdraw this at any time in Chrome’s site settings. If you choose a city, its name is sent to Open-Meteo to find it. Your location is cached on your device and refreshed every few hours.

Search

When you type in the search field, your query is handed to Chrome, which opens it with your default search engine under that search engine’s own privacy policy. The Web Search widget does the same with “Browser Default”; with another engine chosen in the widget, your query is opened on that engine’s website, just as if you had searched there, under its own privacy policy. Large Web Search widgets show your recent searches: they are kept only on this computer, never sent anywhere, and can be turned off or cleared in Settings › Apps › Web Search.

As with any web request, these services receive your IP address and handle requests under their own privacy policies. Your browsing history, page content, notes and reminders are never sent anywhere.

Optional permissions

The Batteries widget reads this computer’s charge level from the browser to display it; the value is not stored or sent.

Your choices

Turn off “App Store Icons” and “Site Icons” in Settings, and remove the Weather widget (or choose a city instead of My Location), and Duo New Tab makes no network requests. Use “Reset Everything” in Settings, or uninstall the extension, to delete all stored data.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated text will be published at this address and with the store listing.
